Year 4: Nightingales
and Nuthatches
Year 4 cover a wide and varied range of topics, in an assortment of engaging ways, to ensure that we make the most of the opportunities to develop the children’s knowledge, skills and understanding. Where possible, we make cross-curricular links between different subjects, including Art, Science and Writing, as well as special weeks in our school calendar. Topics, where appropriate, are supported by visits to museums and other places of interest in order to enhance the children’s learning.
Curriculum Overview
Life in year 4 begins with a virtual trip across the Atlantic Ocean to South America. Children learn about this vast and beautiful continent, looking at different landforms and comparing cities, before diving into one of the largest rainforests in the world and finding out about the animals and plants that call it home.
In the Spring term, we study WWII, looking at the effect it had on Wimbledon, and carry out a field study of our local area. In the Summer term, we learn about the Romans, and consider the impact their invasion had on modern Britain.
Throughout the year, the children have weekly flute lessons, taught by specialist teachers from Merton Music Foundation; towards the end of the Summer term, the children have the opportunity to celebrate this learning in a musical showcase.

Google Classrooms
Both classes use Google Classrooms to support the children’s learning. Some homework, projects, spellings and resources will be uploaded, as well as important documents such as termly newsletters and equipment information.
Homework
Homework forms an important element of the work that we do in Year 4, and weekly tasks are linked to the Maths and English learning taking place in the classroom. Maths homework will be set via Mathletics and Times Table Rockstars, whilst weekly spellings will be posted on our Google Classrooms. English homework is predominantly set in paper form. Each term, the children will be given a project, which will be linked to an element of the curriculum we are covering at that time.
Additional work may be set for children who require some further development of concepts being studied or as a result of tasks not being completed in school.

Sayers Croft, March 2025
In March, Year 4 have a 3-day residential visit to Sayers Croft. This is an activity based centre that aims to challenge and extend the children's learning experiences through a range of outdoor pursuits and team building exercises.
