Year 1: Penguins and Puffins
The curriculum in Year 1 is taught through lots of exciting topics, with one main topic per term. These include 'An African Adventure,' ‘All Creatures Great and Small’ and ‘Let's Look at London!' To enhance our learning, we take the children trips (where possible).
In the Autumn term of Year 1, we run Continuous Provision (we also call this 'busy jobs' or 'choosing activities') for the children. This setup means that the class teacher works with a small focus group while the other children have access to a wide range of activities which are changed daily. These can include fun maths, literacy, fine motor skills, art or phonics activities to support their learning. This is to aid the transition from Reception into Year 1 as well as building on the social and emotional skills that are learned through play. We aim to transition to whole class learning in the Spring term.
Our timetable includes daily phonics lessons, following Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised scheme, where the children develop their knowledge of letter sounds and spelling patterns. Children also have guided reading sessions directly linked to the GPCs (grapheme phoneme correspondence) covered in lessons. This helps to prepare them for the statutory phonics screening test later in the year. As well as our phonics decoding and blending skills we also promote a love of reading for the children by reading a varied range of class stories. Our class book corners are important to us, and a key area of the classroom environment where children can explore a range of texts and genres together.
Our homework is now paperless! Through our online Google classrooms, we send home weekly spellings which are linked to our phonics learning, as well as Mathletics activities.
Teacher assessments will also be used to build up a picture of your child’s learning and achievements. Throughout Year 1, the children make great steps in their learning through a varied and exciting curriculum!
