Languages
At Pelham, our chosen modern foreign language is French. Children in Years 3 to 6 have weekly French lessons, taught by a specialist languages teacher. In earlier years, French is taught using a more informal 'little and often' approach, e.g. through singing, nursery rhymes, puppets etc.
At Pelham, it is our aim to give all pupils the opportunity to learn, enjoy and make progress in French. The children are taught within their year group, where they have the opportunity to work as a whole class, individually or in small groups. Depending on the activity, children will work in 'matched-ability' or 'mixed-ability' groups.
Children in Years 1&2 also have the opportunity to further their learning by attending a French after-school club.
At Pelham we want all pupils to:
- develop an enthusiasm and enjoyment about language
- develop speaking and listening skills
- gain confidence and competence to communicate in another language
- gain awareness of language structure and that the structure changes from one language to another
- develop a positive attitude towards people who speak languages different from their own
- develop an awareness of cultural differences between countries
